The story : When Riley was born , she was born with five human emotions.
Those emotions being Joy , Sadness , Fear , Disgust and Anger - all live inside Riley.
The emotions are there to make sure Riley grows to be a balanced , happy human - controlling all of her past , present and future memories.
Joy is in charge of all the other emotions as Riley needs to be happy most of all.
When Riley is twelve , her parents move her from Minnesota - the home she has only known , to San Francisco.
Joy tries hard to keep Riley happy but when Sadness begins touching Riley's happy memories , things begin to go down hill for Riley.
Now Joy is on a mission to get back in charge of Riley's happy emotions , no matter what it takes.
