Punk : 104 (2019)

Made for EPIX, airing April 1st in the US.
Season 1. Episode 4.
The story: Punk rock did become a hard thing to find but grunge was everywhere...
The 90s brought a music scene where the artists just wanted to be seen and heard.
There was no previous hope of being famous or making a living.
Prior to grunge, music was very regional due to isolation so bands did their own thing.
The Grunge scene in Seattle was no different in that sense.
There were more women rockers now than ever before and they started their own fanzines.
Grunge music became a mutation of punk rock and new wave that the media could handle a lot easier.
This was a time of evolution.
The bands just wanted to live and their indie labels were making millions off their music.
Nirvana's album 'Nevermind' changed the face of music once again.
The industry was now looking for the next best thing.
Overnight there were so many new bands being signed to independent labels, which helped some of the veteran punk rockers finally sell albums.
By 1995 Van's Warped tour was a brainstorm which consisted of indie bands and skateboarding, two things young audiences put together.
The tour brought the music to a much bigger audience.
But sadly many bands at this time lost their way due to bad direction and being used by management and labels.
Stars John "Noodles" Wasserman, Jim Lindberg, Donita Sparks, Mike Ness, Billie Joe Armstrong, Katleen Hanna, Ian McKaye, Fat Mike, Josh Homme, Brett Gurewitz, Dave Grohl

Punk : 103 (2019)

Made for EPIX, airing March 25th in the US.
Season 1. Episode 3.
The story: Now punk rock shows were getting dangerous for everyone. , which resulted in lots of new rules.
New York at this time was a crime-ridden disaster of a place.
Blackouts. Garbage strikes. Son of Sam. The Lower East Side is where all the bad stuff was happening.
It was also where the punk rock scene was.
All the "freaks" were there.
Age limits were now becoming the norm for shows, which made it harder for younger audiences to see live performances.
Bad Brains were in Washington, which was having the same problems as New York but everyone in New York wanted to see them.
They went to New York because it was the place to go and the place to be and soon underage fans were able to go to the shows once again but with limitations, which worked. It's still working.
In Los Angeles, the first band to make the punk scene was X, which featured female Exene on vocals.
The band had very individual people in it and their exposure was purely word of mouth.
Then, in 1979 The Germs hit the scene and even though the band contained female bassist Lorna Doom, the band helped make the scene more male, hardcore oriented.
Things just became a certain way. The Pogo turned into stage diving.
It was also the beginning of the mosh pit...
Things got more violent in the crowds and bands didn't wanna deal with that anymore.
Some went to Canada where the scene was a lot smaller and once again, much different.
Fanzines were starting to make an appearance.
Getting the word out to the public about all these underground bands that had very limited exposure, that worked too.
The early 80s were the days of Reagan, which were very grim.
A time of outrage and injustice, the music got more extreme and warfare was a movement that was coming along with the bands.
Even CBGB's was no longer the place to go. Owner Hilly Kristel was not into all the violent nonsense.
By 82, this new scene was way out.
But in Seattle, they were starving for music and art...
Stars Henry Rollins, Keith Morris, Flea, Iggy Pop, Harley Flanagan, Vinnie Stigma, Darryl Jenifer, Dave Grohl, John Doe, Exene, Alice Bagg, Penelope Shpeers, Duff McKagen, Don Bolles, Joan Jett, Ron Reyes, Joey "Shithead" Keithley, Winston Smith, Kathleen Hanna

Punk : 102 (2019)

Made for EPIX, airing March 18th in the US.
Season 1. Episode 2.
The story: Punk rock was quickly becoming a vehicle to express anger and art in a healthy way.
But when the press caught on, it was always around to twist the truth by misinterpreting its meaning...
In London, Johnny Rotten had been influenced by Iggy Pop.
Iggy embodied punk.
The US was having a good time with punk and having fun but England was taking it very seriously.
By the 70s, fashion shop owner/entrepreneur Malcolm McClaren wanted world attention and to be seen as a genius.
It was a fantastic time in London but there was no work  , people were angry and everyone was hungry for something to do.
All the punks were hanging out and re-inventing themselves by wearing fashions designed by Vivienne Westwood, who was a partner of Malcolms.
New York's punk fashion was much different than England's and fashion was going hand in hand with the music.
Another difference between the US punk scene and the English was a love of reggae music.
Many up and comers out of England enjoyed as well as incorporated reggae into their own sound, making it popular.
Joe Strummer of The Clash wanted his music to have a message. He believed music was a vehicle for social change.
When The Clash gigged with the Sex Pistols women punks started to really begin joining the group of influenced rockers.
But the women had to kick their way in.
So by 76, The Ramones are in England, punk music isn't selling in the US but disco is the current music giant.
English punk was becoming more and more political and the press was misinterpreting more and more of what it all ment.
Punk was honesty, empathy, and originality but as a result of the press misunderstanding, it started to become dangerous for the bands and their audiences.
After a TV interview, the Sex Pistols were banned in England.
So they took their act to the US.
But things didn't get much better there and the band fell apart.
Manager Malcolm McLaren certainly wasn't helping matters.
By January of 78, the Sex Pistols called it quits but guitarist Sid Vicious stayed in the US, gigging and partying around New York with help from his American groupie girlfriend Nancy Spungen.
Sometime later, when Sid was said to have been responsible for his girlfriends' death, things for the punk scene really got ugly.
Stars Johnny Rotten, David Vanian, Pauline Black, Viv Albertine, Terry Chimes, Don Letts, Pam Hogg, Marky Ramone, Joan Jett, Palmolive, Thurston Moore, Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, Henry Rollins, Wayne/Jayne County, Bob Gruen, Legs McNeil, Ian McKaye

"Have you been taught?"

Punk : 101 (2019)

Made for EPIX , airing March 11th in the US.
Season 1. Episode1.
The story: The punk music movement was born in the late 60s.
There was a lot of short-lived cultural type music that came out of the 60s and died in the 60s, so like before, it was an expectation that punk would fade away as well.
But it didn't...
Not forever anyway.
It was a time for new rules and great liberation.
Iggy Pop was at the birth of punk music.
Coming from Detroit, Michigan and starting out as a blues band drummer.
Inspired by The Kinks and later on , much more so by MC5.
MC5 got word of Iggy's drumming and asked him to join the band.
But Iggy saw himself as something more than a blues drummer.
He formed The Stooges and hit the road for New York.
At that time in New York, there wasn't much money but a lot of crime.
So many of the bands that started there did it as something to do and not something to get rich by.
Punk rock music was a way of freedom. To express ones self without boundaries.
The New York Dolls was a band formed by some kids in high school.
One of the very few clubs where their music could be heard was Max' Kansas City.
There, Wayne/Jayne County was DJ'ing and also performed with his band onstage.
Like The New York Dolls, Wayne/Jayne's stage persona was about pure shock value.
Wayne Jayne County recruited Marky Ramone due to his talent but soon Marky was playing in his own band The Ramones.
Danny Fields was a young guy working for the A&R group of Elecktra Records at the time.
He soon signed and managed Iggy Pop and then The Ramones.
But at the time there were very few places to get their sound out.
Then CBGB's owned by Hilly Kristel opened.
Originally meant to be a county/western club, after Wayne/Jayne County was gigged there the whole thing changed.
Bands didn't have to be good to get on the stage at CBGB's they just had to know how to play.
Then Elecktra Records-signed MC5 albums got banned due to profanity. Elektra had to drop them.
Drugs began bringing the scene down with so many of the bands including MC5 and the New York Dolls, just creating a mess
The fashion shop owner, England's Malcolm McClaren, an old acquaintance of forming member of the New York Dolls offered to help.
After helping and also having a hand in re-inventing the band, in the end, could not save their career.
Punk was at a standstill in the US and even though bands were being signed, no one was noticing or buying albums.
The Ramones were still working and on the rise.
It was off to England where they were loved to boost their career...and it worked.
Stars Penelope Spheeris, Keith Morris, Johnny Rotten, John Holstrom, Vinnie Stigma, Legs McNeil, Iggy Pop, Wayne Kramer, Sylvain Sylvain, Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, Flea, Joan Jett, Wayne/Jayne County, Danny Fields, Bob Gruen, Marky Ramone, Clem Burke, Penelope Houston, Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, Harley Flanagan
