AMC/Shudder Presents Cursed Films : The Twilight Zone (2020)

Made for Shudder, airing April 16th in the US.
Season 1. Episode 5.
The story:  Sometimes things happen on the sets of films that aren't planned.
The movies from the 70s pushed boundaries, but at what cost?
There are lots of great films but lots of great mishaps which occurred during the making of those films.
Film sets are controlled chaos which has so many precautions and safety meetings to go alongside the making of those films.
Although sometimes those safety measures were ignored for the sake of the movie.
'The Twilight Zone' is an anthology film inspired by the popular TV series of the same name.
The segment that is directed by John Landis is the brainchild of Landis and Steven Spielberg.
Veteran actor Vic Morrow took the starring role, unimpressed with Landis but a fan of Spielberg's. He also needed the work.
Landis had much success with 'Animal House' as well as 'The Blues Brothers', both of which were made during an era where directors had much freedom from studios.
With his segment for the movie, Landis wanted realism, coming up with the Vietnam sequence.
Known as talented but erratic, immature, and irresponsible, many were wary about Landis' lack of concern for safety.
Not only were real bullets used in the Vietnam scene, but giant explosions as well.
During tests of the scene, the explosions were so powerful they were a worry for some. But Landis wanted more.
During the actual shooting of the final scene, 5 cameras were used for 5 different shots.
The childrens' parents along with Vic Morrow all had anxiety with the scene, but all were reassured everything would be fine, nothing to worry about.
So while shooting, Vic carrying the two children through the water while amazing explosions went off above them, the three were all killed when the helicopter pilot lost control due to those powerful, concurrent explosions.
Five companies were fined millions of dollars over the terrible tragedy.
First, the explosion experts were blamed, and then Landis but in the end, no one was found at fault for the accident.
An accident that everyone involved with was cursed by just being involved...

AMC/Shudder Presents Cursed Films : The Crow (2020)

Made for Shudder, airing April 16th in the US.
Season 1. Episode 4.
The story: There have been many theories surrounding the death of Bruce Lee and his son Brandon.
Those theories stretch from a family curse to the Chinese Mafia.
But in all actuality, their deaths were purely accidental...
'The Crow' is a movie based on the popular comic book written by James OBarr.
As part of Obarr's therapy after losing his fiancee to a drunk driver, he wrote 'The Crow', a story of love and loss.
The film crew who made the movie were lovers of the comic/story and were all in.
They began filming in Wilmington, NC, on February first, 1993.
The very first tragedy that occurred and pointed out from the get-go that the movie was cursed was a crew member backing up a truck with a cherry picker into an electric line, catching on fire and losing his ears...
That was chalked up as bad luck.
Then a massively destructible hurricane blew in, destroying a complete backlot set.
The filmmaker's first and only choice for the lead was Brandon Lee based on some of his work in films, needing an athletic actor.
They found his work impressive, like his father's.
On March 30, 1993, the 47th day into production one of the scenes was changed at the last minute.
The scene was to see Brandon's character being stabbed but was changed to shot.
While filming the changing scene, the dummy bullet, which had been overlooked from weeks prior, had lodged a real bullet in the chamber, killing him.
The actor who had pulled the trigger was devastated as well as the crew.
No one wanted to go on and finish the film.
But when Brandon's fiancee and mother stepped up to encourage for his sake, they did just that.

AMC/Shudder Presents Cursed Films : Poltergeist (2020)

Made for Shudder, airing April 9th in the US.
Season 1. Episode 3.
The story:  We hear a lot of tragic things that happen in sets of horror movies.
Life is full of tragedies and accidents.
People like to make sense out of horror movie mishaps by rationalizing them, fascinated by the unknown.
Curses seem to be a solution.
The pool scene in 'Poltergeist' used real skeletons.
First of all, in the first of the three films,  brother/son Robbie, played by Oliver Robins, is attacked by a toy clown in his bedroom.
It is said that the mechanics were faulty with maneuvering the clown, actually strangeling the actor.
People rationalizing the deaths of the actresses involved in these movies want to believe the real skeletons are to blame, but in reality real skeletons have been starring in movies for years with no side effects.
Dominique Dunne was a young actress, who played the oldest sister/daughter Dana in the first film.
She was the daughter of murder writer Dominick Dunne and the younger sister of actor Griffin Dunne.
Dominique was involved in an abusive relationship which she broke off.
After the movie was released, Dominique's abusive ex showed up at her house and strangled her, leaving her in a coma.
After being hospitalized, and on life support for three days, she was taken off life support.
Her killer received a mere two years for her killing.
Youngest actress Heather O'Rouke had been sick before the making of the third installment of the franchise.
At the time, she was being treated for Crohn's Disease. But she didn't have Crohn's Disease.
Heather had a birth defect and as a result of not being correctly treated, her intestines burst.
She was 12-years-old when she died.
While the third movie was not quite finished, the makers of the film didn't have the heart to finish and wanted to just forget all about it.
But they were forced to finish the film, using a body double to stand in for Heather, which was not only unsettling for the makers but very sad as well.

AMC/Shudder Presents Cursed Films : The Omen (2020)

Made for Shudder, airing on April 9th in the US.
Season 1. Episode 2.
The story: There are lots of examples of curses through the ages.
To this day, people pay other people to put curses on those who they have ill will.
But can these situations have a different explanation? Actions have reactions.
The story of the 'The Omen' being cursed began when a religious advisor was brought onto the set.
He said that the moviemakers were inviting the devil into the movie...
Although most people who were involved in the production of the film find that it was a true blessing, there were some horrifying and tragic shake-ups.
First, when actor Gregory Peck was inflight to the London set, his plane was struck by lightning.
Sometime later, movie producer Mace Neufeld's flight en route to the set had the same exact experience.
Later it was learned that the initial flight Gregory Peck had scheduled but canceled crashed killing all 6 people on board as well as the pilot's wife and children when the plane crashed into their car...
At the time production started on 'The Omen', IRA bombings were going on in London.
A bomb went off a block or so away from Neufeld's hotel, killing 1 and injuring 20.
It also took down the restaurant he and his wife had reservations at for that evening.
The baboon scene was filmed at an animal park. During the scene where Lee Remmick is driving through the park, the car she was driving stalled, trapping her inside while the baboons attacked the car.
Later still, an animal trainer involved in the training of those baboons was mauled to death by lions at the park.
After the film was made, the special effects supervisor for the film was involved in a car accident where he remained unharmed but his fiancee was not so lucky.
It was said that near where the accident occurred there was a street sign that said Ommen, 666km.
All these things seemed to be more than just coincidence.
But maybe we are looking at these incidents all wrong...

AMC/Shudder Presents Cursed Films : The Exorcist (2020)

Made for Shudder, airing April 2nd in the US.
Season 1. Episode 1.
The story: Evil goes way back in time.
'The Exorcist is a movie that brought that very existence to light for a lot of people.
From the beginning, the movie was surrounded by trouble...or was it just bad luck?
First, a whole set was completely burnt up. Everything except Regan's room...
At that point, the movie got the reputation of being cursed.
Friends and family of those involved in the movie died.
Due to Friedkins' need for extreme measures for shock value, Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn were injured during grueling stunts.
Based on a true story, the movie is authentic and accurate.
One of the actors was even convicted of murder...
All the horrors of the unsettling film are accredited to a curse.
The movie became bigger than anyone involved would have expected, partly due to the over-the-top hype of public reaction.

Happy Happy Joy Joy The Ren and Stimpy Story (2020)

Released August 14th in the US.
Filmed in California, New York, Canada, and South Carolina.
The story: When John Kricfalusi was 4 years old, he believed cartoons were magic.
Cartoons became his life.
In 1978, while attending college John met longtime collaborator Lynne Naylor.
The two had a lot in common, but mostly a love for art and animation.
John brought together a group of very talented artists and with them, started Spumco Productions.
John began pitching show ideas to tv stations but was constantly rejected.
Not until he saw an ad for the kid's TV network Nickelodeon looking for new shows for their Saturday morning lineup did John meet his match.
The network didn't immediately enjoy the pilot but the executive producer convinced Nickelodeon to allow John at least 6 shows.
Unexpected by the company though, after its first airing, The Ren and Stimpy Show was a huge hit.
It was grueling, demanding work right from the beginning for all the employees of Spumco Productions, but they all felt it was worth it.
John was also demanding and pushy and had very high expectations for the work, seemingly never happy with the results.
When John just would no longer go with the demands the network was putting on him and the show, Nickelodeon dropped him.
Not exactly ending The Ren and Stimpy Show, but changing its ultimate outcome.
