The story: A married couple sees their only daughter off to college, under the impression that she will not be returning to spend her Christmas vacation with them.
The couple decides with much resistance to go ahead and cancel what plans they usually have, which is to throw a very big party and invite tons of people.
Instead book a cruise for themselves for the holiday.
The townspeople do not approve of the couple canceling their ritual holiday celebrations as they are very in tuned with Christmas and they give the couple such a hard time for not complying with their holiday traditions.
But the couple tries not to let any of that bother them.
Now that the couple is all squared away and ready to go on their cruise, the night before they leave their daughter calls informing her parents that she is now planning on coming home for Christmas and is looking forward to the party that her parents throw every year.
Now the couple feels obligated to cancel their cruise and start planning their Christmas celebration in less than 24 hours time.
