The story: It is 1998, Ohio. Rob Bilott is a defense attorney for environmental companies.
Out of the blue, Rob is approached at work by a man with videotapes, from Rob's hometown in West Virginia who claims to need him as his lawyer.
When Rob is too busy and tries sending the man away, he learns that his name was given to the man by Rob's grandmother.
Now he has Rob's attention.
He goes to visit his grandmother and learns the man that asked for his help has a farm that Rob spent much time on as a child.
Rob goes to visit with the man, who wholeheartedly believes that the local DuPont plant has contaminated his land which is killing his livestock.
Rob doesn't want to believe any of this could possibly be true but to help,  goes ahead and gets a report for the man from DuPont.
But that is not good enough for the farmer.
After witnessing some strange behavior with a cow at the farm, Rob starts believing that there quite possibly could be some truth to the man's claims.
Rob decides to take on his case after reading into DuPont's chemical files that at first make no sense.
As Rob continues on, he uncovers a number of secrets hidden by DuPont over a course of many years, putting his job and life in jeopardy along the way but never giving up the fight.
