The story : August 1 , 1966 was a scorching hot summer day in Austin , Texas.
In and around the University of Texas , everyone went about their business like any other day.
But by noon time , major chaos ensued.
25-year-old Charles Whitman , a former Marine sharpshooter and troubled student at the University , had began shooting at and killing many people at random from the observation deck of the main clock tower on the University grounds.
Many people who were there as well as having been shot and survived that day tell their story.
