The story: Dickie Roberts was a child sitcom star in the 70s.
His mother was a very distant parent when things got rough for Dickie and ultimately left him after the sitcom he starred in was canceled.
Dickie had taken many jobs outside of the showbiz industry to make ends meet, but never found any happiness in any of it.
After many humiliating experiences, Dickie never let his luck get him down.
He becomes aware of a new movie, written by Rob Reiner and Dickie wants the starring role.
Dickie feels if he can land this role, he will have made his comeback...
Dickie's agent gets him the audition with Rob Reiner for the part but Rob does not think Dickie can pull it off.
Once again, Dickie does not let this discouragement get him down and he comes up with the idea to hire a family to live with, in hopes that he will learn what it is to be like to have a real family and in doing so , finally landing his dream part.
