The story: As a little girl, Aretha lives a comfortable life with her dad, grandmother, and siblings.
Herself, along with her siblings, are always excited to see their mother, any chance they get.
Aretha enlights in singing at her father's Saturday night parties and listening to her mother sing.
But just weeks before young Aretha's 10th birthday, she unexpectedly loses her mother.
For weeks afterward, Aretha can't get out of her depressed rut but is soon forced by her father to once again, begin singing at their church.
Aretha does this for many years, among other things until her father takes her to New York to help her get a record deal.
But after a while and many records, Aretha isn't singing what she feels. She needs to perform music that she can make into hits.
When Aretha begins trying to break free from her fathers' stronghold, she begins a romatic and musical relationship against her fathers' wishes, which eventually helps send her career in the right direction.
