The story : It is 1944 Spain.
The war is over but there are armies still about. One being the Fascist regime and another fighting it.
Young Ofelia is traveling with her very ill and pregnant mother to the country to be with her new father , the Captain of the Fascists.
She is a child who loves to read about fairy tales and this worries her mother.
Almost to their destination they must stop for her mother needs air.
Ofelia gets out and explores the wooded surroundings and while doing so , believes she has seen a fairy.
Later that evening Ofelia is awakened by the very bug she believes is a fairy.
She shows it a picture of a fairy from one of her books and before her eyes the bug turns into a fairy.
The fairy urges Ofelia to follow it into the nearby labyrinth which she was warned to stay clear of.
Inside , Ofelia meets a faun who tells her that she is the long lost Princess Moanna and they have been waiting for her.
Ofelia is given a book of 3 tasks that she must accomplish so she can be free of her human form and once again join her parents and all the forest creatures in the kingdom.
