The story: It's 1962 New York.
Italian American tough guy Tony "Lip" Vallelonga is a bouncer at the popular Copacabana nightclub.
When the place gets temporarily closed down Tony is in need of a job to continue supporting his family.
Out of the blue, Tony gets a call from the boss at the Copa.
Some doctor was looking for him and wants him to meet with him , about a driver's job.
Tony meets with African American Doctor Don Shirley, unknowing that the Doctor is a very important classical pianist.
After taking some time to think about it and then talking with Tony's wife, the Doctor has his record company hire Tony to drive and protect him on a two-month concert tour through the Southern States.
