The story : It is 1950.
Freddie Quell is a seaman.
When the war is over , Freddy is released from duty.
He doesnt know how to do many things but it seems the few things he does know how to do fail due to his loyalty to boozing.
One evening while on a bender , Freddy sees a group of people having a grand time on a large boat.
The next morning , Freddy finds himself on the boat and have been saved by the man who owns it.
Lancaster Dodd - the man who saved Freddy, is into saving people from themselves in many ways.
Dodd is a writer, he wrote a self-help novel of sorts.
He is in the process of writing his second novel.
Freddy learns many things about himself and life by having Dodd and friends in his life so closely.
