They Call Us Monsters (2016)

Released June 6th in the US.
Filmed in California.
The story : In the mid-1970s, there was no law in effect for juveniles who committed murder crimes , there was only a bit of rehabilitation available.
By the early 1990s , the law became one that incarcerated juvenile offenders in adult prisons , often tagging on life sentences without a chance of parole.
Many believe that life sentences for juvenile offenders is too harsh and that they should at least have a chance at being eligible for parole.
Here we meet four juvenile offenders who are all incarcerated in an adult prison in California.
A screenwriter took the opportunity to teach a class on screenwriting in the prison and the four inmates we get to know are the four who signed up for that class.
Meanwhile , law makers in California debate and overturn the law that keeps juvenile offenders incarcerated without having a chance at parole.
