The story: Early 1970's, small America. There is much suffering in society.
It seems the work ethic has been depleted due to a devastating civil war, and everything now is controlled by the military.
Every year there is a televised walking competition called 'The Long Walk'.
Its intention is to make productive adults out of otherwise lazy young men who would not normally have the means to make a life and living on their own due to the economic depletion.
The "walk" is considered to be inspiration for those young men watching the event on TV.
50 young men compete, one picked randomly from each state, to walk as long and as far as they can at a steady pace.
The prize is money and one wish granted.
But there can be only one winner.
